Summer 2009 Knowledgeletter: Contributing in Our Communities
With the economy and the capital markets finding some stability, now is a good time to discuss how we can contribute to our communities--making them stronger and better.
First, I invite you to support my upcoming Courage Classic bicycle ride to benefit of The Children's Hospital. A 157-mile ride is a big project for me, and a satisfying way to support an institution that adds immeasurable value to our community.
I also want to bring folks up to date on some of my interesting and rewarding non-profit board work. Perhaps it will inspire you to find an organization to which to contribute.

Please Support My Ride
This July 25–27, I will ride my third Courage Classic in four years. I love contributing in this way: I'm motivated to get in shape and I help to raise a ton of money for a good cause. Last year's ride raised $2.7 million. Over 157 miles of tough but beautiful Colorado mountain passes, with Children's patients cheering us on, I get to be a part of the incredible power of 2,000 people pulling together.
Despite such motivators and experiences, the recession has reduced charitable contributions nationwide. So, I'm aiming for more supporters contributing smaller amounts. (Of course, don't be shy if you can afford to give more.) You can easily donate by visiting my rider's page and clicking on the Donate to My Ride button. Thanks so much!
Not Bored by Board Work
- Sitting on the Summit Foundation finance and investment committee and working with it's investment advisor, I've experienced a role reversal. I see the monitoring and assessing of the endowment's investment policy from the client's side, providing useful perspective for my work. I also penned an article on launching philanthropic efforts for the Foundation's June newsletter.
- Backcountry land use regulations, mining claims, and FCC rules have challenged my skills as Summit Public Radio has moved forward on plans to shore up our ownership rights to the Mt. Baldy transmission site.
- Summit Independent Business Alliance (SIBA) is co-sponsoring the inaugural SustainaBiz conference next week with High Country Conservation (HC3). I will be participating on a panel entitled, Nuts and Bolts of Financial Fitness. Also on the panel are a local CPA and the director of the local small business development center.
- Most recently, I have become involved with Washington Park Cares in Denver, helping with strategic and development planning. WPC is an "aging-in-place" organization, helping seniors remain in their homes as they grow older. We have a home in Washington Park and may very well age in that place...when the time comes.
I'm doing what I can to make a difference and hope you are too. It's fun!
